Houston Getting 50 Mbit residential connections early 2010

Paul WhiteOne of my neighbors works in management for
Comcast here in Houston.
After talking with him it would seem that
Comcast has big plans for
Houston. Who would you like a 50 MegaBit Downstream, and a 20 MegaBit Upstream? He said that in the first quarter of 2010 they are planning to launch the higher speed residential service to areas of north Houston, with plans to take it city wide by the end of 2010. He had no idea of what they would be charging for this, but naturally it wouldn't be cheap. He said it would require they install a special modem in your house.
Upload speed is often over looked by residential customers. They feel they want to download things fast, and that download speeds are all that matters. But your upload speed will determine how fast your system can make the requests for the downloads. With a fast enough upload speed you could do things like host a server out of your house.
To put these speeds in perspective
Dialup - 56 Kb
DSL - 1.5 Mb
Cable - 8.0 Mb
T1 - 1.5 Mb (small
business)
T3 - 45 Mb (large
business)
New
Comcast Service with special modem - 50 Mb
