New Blog Design under way
Posted on Dec 7, 2008 by
Paul WhiteThe first blog I programmed, was ok. It got the job done, but it lacked in some
SEO. Here are the main differences between the old blog and the new blog.
Old Blog
Table based layout
Medium use of
CSS for styling
Categories listed on every page
Modules were not cached.
Comments were not filtered
Photos were only 640 x 480 in size
New Blog
Div based layout
Intensive use of
CSS for all styling
Categories listed on main pages, but only specific categories listed on individual blog entries.
Models ( Authors, Archieves, Categories ) cached to server memory to cut down
mySQL queries
Comments are not filtered for various drugs ( spam comments ), that my wife will attest I do not need.
Photos made larger 720 wide
Why the changes?
I wanted something that was clean, and efficient, along with something that would make Search Engines happy. I made a blog not just because i wanted to share my thoughts with the world, but also because I wanted to make a little money with Google Adsense. Thus far I am not making very much with google. Of course most of this is due to my lack of updating it with unqiue content on a frequent basis. On one of my clients
websites, I build a similar interface, and they have been posting content daily. The result is they are slowly but surely getting an increase in traffic, and if we were running adsense on it, an increase in revenue. Its one thing to hear about other guys starting blogs and getting rich, but another to actually see your own client, start to show signs of success. Even though I take full credit for building the site for them. I do admit a blog is nothing without content of which they have provided. I will try to make more time in the future for updates, hopefully this will result in an increase of google revenue.
