Next Time you Brag about your IPhone remember this

Posted on Jul 21, 2014 by Paul White

People with IPhone's or IPads tend to be a little too proud of their devices.  What they don't understand is how they are being judged by people who actually know how to use a computer.

IPhone's have become a status symbol.  It says, I'm cool,  and I have enough money to buy fancy electronics.  But what owners of these i devices also are advertising is their lack of real computer knowledge.  If they had real computer knowledge they would realize how limiting their Iphones really are when compared to Android, or even other mobile platforms.

Bragging about your Iphone to people with computer skills is like bragging about your bottle rockets to an engineer who worked on the Saturn 5 Rocket.  Its like bragging about how fast your Honda civic with a fart muffler is, to a guy who races Top Fuel Draggsters.  Its like telling a person you have a business then giving them an @aol.com email address for them to contact you.  All these things will immediately be judged by people who know the difference.

Companies however love IPhone people.  Their lack of computer skills and need to feel important through their material purchases, means they will spend more on less, just because they don't know any better.  They are an important part of our economy without them the DOW wouldn't be sitting at 16,000.

As a developer and IT guy, I have had my share of battles with IPhone people.  They have problems checking their email, and refuse to believe its because of some setting on their phone, and say it has to be your Mail Server.  The same mail server that is hosting the email for some 300 other users who have no problems getting their messages.  I ask them to do something very simple on their phone, and they don't know how.  Finally they say its ok I can just go the Apple Store to get help.  So you have paid too much for a device that forced you to get in your car and drive to the Apple store to get help.

Thats why there are so many people at the Apple Store.  They are all there getting help with their devices.  Nothing againt Apple for being supportive of their customers.  But people really need to ask themselves if being dependent on others to make up for where you lack in computer skills is eventually going to be your undoing.

One of the companies I consult does a lot of hiring.  When people submit their applications, one of the things we look at is what device did they use.  If they are appling for something very technical that requires computer skills and they used an IPhone or IPad to submit their Applicaion, they are instantly disqualified.  The few instances where get give them a shot, they fail miserably.

Now I don't have a problem with Apple.  Mac OS in some ways is superior to Windows.  Especially since that POS called Windows 8 came out.  Apple has been consistent in their design ideology for over 20 years.  With each generation of Mac OS including small improvements to the previous.  And for this I applaud Apple for staying consistent.  My Issue is with iOS which is still a very premature OS in terms of functionality, and power.

I have nothing against people with IPhones.  I know a few Tech Guys with IPhones, guys I would consider advanced users.  My Issue is with the other 99% of Apple users who think having an IPhone some how gives them status, or makes them important.  Of course the economy needs people at all levels of the food chain to participate.  But I want them to realize next time they smugly brag about ohh " I can use my IPhone" to do that, how they are setting themselves up for failure.

When I tell a client I am going to do a task via my Phone.  I just do the task.  I don't say, "Let me use my Android Phone to send you that file".  The same mentality applies to people who feel a need to point out what device they are going to use to complete a task.  The device you use to complete the task is irrelavent.  Your pointing out the brand of device you use to attempt to complete it, is nothing more than bragging, assuming the person listening will be impressed with you because you have an IPhone.
