How to remove K9 without password

Posted on Jul 21, 2011 by Paul White

One of my clients recently called me, and asked me how do I get rid of this K9 internet protection?  Turns out his laptop was busted, so he took his kids laptop with him.  But he forgot that K9 limits what websites he can visit, and even worse he forgot his password for K9.  So I remoted into his system and hacked the system to stop K9.  I figured others might be in the same situation so I will share how I did it.

Keep in mind this does not remove K9 from your system. It just disables it.

Instructions for disabling K9 Web Protection without a password

Open Control Panel
Open Administrative Tools
Open Services
Look for the Service by Blue Coat, Right Click Properties
Change the Startup Type to Disabled.
Click on Apply
Stop the service
Click Ok

Close all open windows ( Services, Administrative Tools, Control Panel )
Open My Computer
Open C: ( or whatever drive windows is installed on )
Open Windows ( or whatever your Windows Folder is called )
Open System32
Open Drivers
Delete the file bckd.sys

Reboot the computer
K9 should now be disabled.

At least this worked for me.
Hopefully this helps others who need to disable the K9 Web Protection

Good job Paul White, this absolutely does disable it.  Thanks to tech's like you people can tell programs like this to go fuck themselves... I hate programs that control what you do and where you go.

i followed the instrcuctions, and this does disable it, however i tried to enable it again by restoring the bckd.sys file and setting the program to automatic startup again, then i rebooted. however i tried to visit a site that i knew was blocked originally, it allowed access, and a bluecoat message popped up saying that the program is corrupt? how do i completely restore the original settings! i need to know so that my parents dont know i disabled it!

    @K
I would recommend trying to use system restore to revert your system to a previous point in time.  If that doesn't work your only other option is to reinstall the program but you are going to need your license key to do that.

    it worked thanks man!

To BK: Programs like these that "control what you do and where you go" are necessary for people like me. If not for k9, I would be wasting my time surfing porn and letting it ruin my life and career. I can surf porn for hours a day, and I cannot control myself.

I am not saying that k9 should be installed and implemented for everyone. For people like you (and I suppose the majority of the population) who have the discipline to prevent their surfing habits from ruining their lives, of course, k9 is not needed. BUT it is nice for addicts like me to have the option to install programs like these, and everytime I hear people bitching about such filter programs I get really mad; what right do you have to prevent me from wanting to filter my internet?

Unfortunately, I have figured out the bckd.sys loophole quite a while back, thanks to tech savvy people who post the solution on the net, rendering k9 absolutely useless to me now. And my life is falling apart bit by bit as I neglect my job and friends. Any way to solve this bckd.sys loophole is much appreciated, thanks.

    @J
What you say is very true, many people can't control their impulses.  This doesn't just go for porn sites and adult related content, but also for facebook, youtube, and the internet in general.  Eventually I feel people's addiction to the internet will start to cause our country's GDP to drop from lack of productivity.

All you should have to do is reinstall K9, you will just need your key to do that.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks Paul! It worked a treat. You've erased several months of frustration in a couple of minutes. I owe you a beer.

Is it possible to simply move the file where k9 can't find it and then move it back to restore?
    unta | Nov 19, 2011 3:59 PM
does this uninstall it from the computer or just disable and you can turn it on and off
    Paul | Nov 19, 2011 6:10 PM
This hack, just disables it, and does not uninstall it.
You have to do a complete reinstall to restore it to your computer, and that might require credentials.
    unta | Nov 20, 2011 11:47 AM
will i be able to turn it back on because i dont want my parents to find out. im asking this b/c in the process you told us we have to delete a file and i dont want to delete the whole thing. (you know what im trying to say)
    Paul | Nov 20, 2011 1:03 PM
    @unta
Even though I am sure many kids would like to have an easy way to disable / enable K9. This hack is not designed for this.  So if you do remove it, there is no way to restore it  Its designed for people that need to remove it for good, and have no intentions of reinstalling it.  So if you want to stay on your parent's good side, you don't want to enable this hack.

Alright, so I followed the steps, but when I wanted to turn it back on, and replaced the bckd.sys, and re-enabled Blue Coat, it just blocked everything.

Can someone help me out with this?

    Hi Paul.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for the clear instructions. Reading the comments, I bet you wish you'd never published them! I was horrified to read people blaming you for their addictive behaviour. It's a perfect example of what is often called "typical addict behaviour" in 12 Step meetings.  I've attended Sex Addicts Anonymous myself and had friends whose lives were saved by AA and other fellowships. The idea that any computer program (or going bankrupt, or falling in love, etc. etc.) could stop someone from using porn, drinking, gambling or any other compulsive behaviour is ridiculous. Blaming other people is exactly the sort of immature thinking that helps addicts to stay sick - and I'm speaking from personal experience.

I'd encourage anyone reading this to take responsibility themselves. For me, that actually meant admitting I needed help and getting to a meeting. Good luck! And Paul - thanks for a generous and unselfish act.

WOW!!! of all the articles I read of how to uninstall/disable k9, your the only one that solve my problem. even the tech here in my place cannot solve it, there only option is to reformat it, but it is so costly to do it coz of important application inside my pc. Thank You very much man. your my idol...

Thanks for posting this - I had a BSOD which was related to bckd.sys. I have now updatedd K9 and it said that it had changed it, so maybe this will fix the problem.

STE, I really sympathise. I am glad of K9 every day. It's still useful even if you know the way round. The fix does at least allow you to run the computer if K9 will not run.

I'm grateful to God for helping me work out my problems, but it can be a long process.  Why not find an ACC counsellor who may be able to help.

    God bless,

    Lawrence

    Hey guys,

So is there a way to prevent the disabling of k9 through the cbkd driver? So k9 doesn't fall flat on its feet if that driver is deleted/disabled?

I know that you can apply an admin password, but is there any other way??

Hello there! I forgot the k9 password for my iPhone. I've tried to get the temporal password but it says could not connect to the server.
    XCLN | Sep 6, 2013 2:25 AM
Disabling works great (on a windows 7 Pro 32bit system). Thanks!
Using Revo Uninstaller after that (and ignoring/ cancelling at the K9 password prompt) completely removes K9.  Well .. not really: when I installed K9 again (from a new web download) it "found" the old settings and was again locked, requiring the password to do anything.
So ..... there must have been "something" left over after the uninstall for K9 to find its old configuration.  (TBC'ed, hopefully)

Hi, guys. I want to help those who are strugling get out of their problem (gambling, porn, etc.).

There is a "Allways Block" function of K9 wich allows you to simply block pages without password needed.

I suggest you to block this page and NEVER KNOW HOW TO DISABLE K9 :). This is just an idea. I pray for you to my Jesus Christ who wants to set us all free from the sin.
